Here at Kenworthy Chiropractic we use Cliniko online booking software. This allows you to book yourself in without having to call the clinic. You can see which appointments are available on each day and pick the time that suits you best. There's no app to download; the site is easily accessed from our Facebook page, or website and it's very simple to use. Once you've added your details you can click "Remember Me" and you'll never have to enter them again. If you wish you can then add your appointment to your Google Calendar/iCal Calendar, or there's an option to print a hard copy. Once you've made your booking you'll receive a confirmation email and you'll also receive a reminder 2 days before your appointment (which is why we need a recent email address). Should you wish to cancel an appointment you can do so via the link in the confirmation email you were sent. To change appointments, simply cancel the first one, then book another. This system is so easy to use and it puts you in control. You can even book in when the clinic is closed. Indeed, we've found many people book in during the night when their pain has kept them awake.
Johanna McCormick DC has is a finalist in the Health and Wellbeing category of the Enterprise Vision Awards 2018. Johanna's achievements since she opened the clinic have been quite remarkable; She's helped so many people to feel better whilst creating an environment that is safe and welcoming. Todaywe have 2nd year McTimoney student Hannah Briggs observing in the clinic. Hannah was encouraged to become a chiropractor by Johanna and is now positively thriving. It's great to have her on board and we have a fully booked clinic today, so there ought to be plenty for her to observe. If you think you might like to train as a McTimoney chiropractor, Johanna would be more than happy to have a chat with you (when she has a spare moment) and explain what's required and why she thinks it's the best job in the world. If you have purchased one of our Dr. Graeme Massagers and you suffer from insomnia, or poor sleep quality why not give it a try just before you go to bed? Both Johanna and I have found that a 5 minute massage at bedtime sends us to sleep faster and we sleep far more deeply than we would do usually. Happy Zzzzzzz.

Johanna McCormick DC spent Thursday morning at All Hallows School in Penwortham talking to the Years 9’s as part of their Health & Wellness week. Johanna talked about the importance of spinal health in relation to brain function and plasticity. That is, the brain’s reliance on the nervous system to supply it with the information it needs to function optimally and even change structurally as new neural pathways are formed. Johanna went on to highlight the importance of posture, sleep and movement to ensure this process can run as smoothly as possible.
If you’re aiming to get fit and stay fit then Kenworthy Chiropractic can help. Chiropractic treatments are scientifically proven to improve stamina and performance in athletes. Moreover, a regular chiropractic MOT can help you to stay at the top of your game (especially when it’s an holistic top to toe treatment). Our patients that practice contact sports tend to visit the most frequently; usually every 4-6 weeks. For those that run, cycle, swim etc vary between 6 -12 weeks. Of course, it’s entirely to you and we promise not to cajole you into booking more treatments than you want. That said, those of our patients that have made chiropractic care part of their health regime have all said it’s been money well spent and that it’s made a significant difference to their physical well being.
There are lots of magazine articles, memes, personal trainers and motivational gurus laying down the maxim ‘Never Give Up’. Whilst this advice is meant to get us all fired up and focused it is actually misguided, dangerous and potentially lethal. In the clinic we see patients that struggle to recover because they won’t (can’t?) stop training even though they’re injured. Changing track, even to recover, is perceived as giving up and we all know yous should 'never give up'. Or should you?
So, what if your Three Peak Challenge ended as a Two Peak Challenge, or your marathon was more of a Snickers ? So, what if you did give up? Does it make you a bad person? No. Did you fail? ….In a way...Maybe...But it’s not really a failure if it means you’ll recover and live to try again another day. That is, you didn’t give up as such, you simply postponed your goal attempt until you were better equipped to achieve it. Indeed, listening to your body and acting responsibly ought to be seen as a huge achievement in itself. If your body is hurting, don’t push through the pain. Try to figure out what’s hurting, why it’s hurting and come up with a plan to stop it hurting.
Now, some athletes might contend that they’d never be competitive if they didn’t ignore their pain and go that extra mile. Fair enough, if you’re going to win a gold medal and have a dodgy knee for a couple of weeks it might be worth it. However, many people put their health and lives at risk because giving up simply can’t be entertained (don't forget, giving up is for losers).
In his book Destructive Goal Pursuit: The Mount Everest Disaster, Christopher Kayes gives examples of climbers that could have saved their lives by giving up. However, they were so intent on attaining their goal and reaching the summit of Everest, they pressed on, even though THEY KNEW it would kill them. Kayes argues that this obsession with setting goals is misguided. He terms this form of ‘destructive goal pursuit’ as goalodicy. Kayes argues that one problem with setting goals is that they can become obsessive and inflexible i.e. The goal becomes almost impossible to abandon no matter how much the circumstances change.
Kayes also points out that setting inflexible goals actually restricts learning i.e. The obsession with goal achievement precludes all other experiences. So, you climbed a mountain but you trod on a family of gophers and knocked three other climbers off the mountain because you were too focused on that all important flag selfie at the summit. Other issues with goal obsession include a potential for increased and unnecessary risk taking. Moreover, if goal achievement is one's sole focus it can lead to unethical behaviour (Lance Armstrong anyone?).
In conclusion (at last) don’t give up your evening run just because it’s spitting, or you've swallowed a midge - But if you’ve a fat ankle and hip pain give yourself a break. If you’re on mile 16 of your marathon and you’d rather have an ice cream and a lie down, don’t give up. However, if you’re in agony and feel like you might die, then pull out, regroup and try again another day.

Kenworthy Chiropractic now treats a number of athletes that attend the clinic on a regular basis in order to stay at the peak of fitness and maximise their performance. These include martial artists, mma, boxers, wrestlers, golfers, runners, cyclists and parkour enthusiasts amongst others. Indeed, the benefits these athletes experience is supported by a wealth of scientific research. In one study (see below) 50 athletes were divided into two groups. In a hand reaction test measuring the speed of reaction with the hand in response to a visual stimulus, the control group exhibited less than a 1% response while the chiropractic group exhibited more than an 18% response after 6 weeks. After 12 weeks the chiropractic group exhibited more than a 30% improvement. Now, that has got to give you an edge.

Doctor of Chiropractic Johanna McCormick will once again be offering free posture screens at the Preston Health Mela on Saturday 14th of April. Last year's even was a huge success and the Kenworthy Chiropractic stand was busy all day. In fact Johanna was screening other health care professionals before the event started and was still examining members of the public long after all the other stands had closed down.
